How enVerid Sorbents Work

What Makes enVerid Sorbents Special

The secret ingredient in every HVAC Load Reduction (HLR) module is the sorbent cartridge. The cartridges contain a unique non-toxic and eco-friendly sorbent designed to capture over 250 types of volatile organic compound (VOCs,) carbon dioxide, ozone, and aldehydes. While filters only pick up solid particles, enVerid sorbent cartridges remove contaminant gases and are certified under ASHRAE 145.2.

These sorbents are highly selective in their ability to remove unwanted indoor air contaminants and represent breakthroughs in materials science discovered by national laboratories and university research groups and further developed by enVerid scientists and engineers. The sorbent mixture includes specially engineered components that target specific types of indoor air contaminants. These include:

  • Carbon Dioxide:enVerid reengineered sorbents that were initially developed to address atmospheric CO2 and global climate change for indoor use.
  • Volatile Organic Compounds: The sorbent captures VOCs using novel synthetic carbon technology previously only used in military and industrial settings.
  • Formaldehyde: The sorbent mixture includes high capacity formaldehyde-selective sorbents developed by enVerid.

During the indoor air scrubbing or adsorption mode, the HLR module’s fans direct air through the sorbent cartridges. As they pass through the cartridges, contaminants bind to the sorbent inside, which removes them from the air. Aftwerward, the air is contaminant-free and ready to breathe.

In order to stay at maximum efficiency, sorbent cartridges require periodic regeneration. During the regeneration process, the sorbent cartridge is heated up to 130-150 degrees Fahrenheit. At this temperature, the sorbent releases the contaminants, which are immediately vented outside via the building exhaust. Once the sorbent is clean again, it’s ready to start removing contaminants from the indoor air again. enVerid’s sorbent is the first of its kind to be able to regenerate at temperatures below 1000 degrees Fahrenheit, making it the only sorbent safe for regular indoor use.

The cycle of adsorption and regeneration is completely automated and can either follow a pre-defined schedule during the day or use the indoor air quality (IAQ) sensors to determine when regeneration is most needed. The sorbent cartridges need to be replaced annually, but the cost of the cartridges is less than the energy savings they produce, so no incremental operational expenditure (OPEX) budget is required.

What is a Sorbent?

Sorbents have been safely used for many years to purify air in places like the International Space Station, remove odors in buildings, and protect workers exposed to products that have unhealthy fumes. In all these cases, gaseous contaminant molecules attach to the sorbent, making the air healthy again. enVerid’s sorbent mix is unique in two ways: it captures all the contaminants common in buildings and it can regenerate at very low temperatures, enabling it to regain its capacity and cleaning efficiency over and over.
